SLJ Week 1 Day 4

Activity 2: Playing Games

Hundreds of years ago, young Māori children were taught to play a number
of games, including Poi Rakau, Ki O Rahi, Koruru Taonga and Poi Toa.
Read about each of these four games on the Rangatahi tu Rangatira website.
Have you played any of them before? Isn’t it cool how the games
have been passed down for generations?
That is just the best thing, passing games from generation to generation.

Choose one game, and on your blog, tell us the (i) name of the game,
(ii) the goal or purpose of the game, and (iii) two rules.

The game I pick is Poi Rakau. The goal of the game is to keep the sticks
up without it touching or hitting the floor. You can just click his to watch Poi Rakau.

First rule: Must leave the stick standing up
Second rule: No pushing throwing the stick to the floor.

  2. Hi Loto,

Ruby here from the Summer Learning Journey team.

Poi Rakau is a very fun game! I like how you've included the link for the video so people can watch how to play it if they would like to try it.
You've come up with two good rules and identified the goal of the game so well done.

Have you played this game before? I've played it a few times and always enjoy it. It uses lots of hand-eye coordination which I'm much better at than any running game!

I look forward to reading more of your blog over the summer.
    Cheers,
    Ruby.
