New Zealand is a Democracy

This country (New Zealand) is a democracy.
New Zealand has a Democratic system of government when people vote for who
they want to be represented by.
The age limit you can vote is 18 and over and must be a New Zealand citizen.
In New Zealand we choose our leaders every 3 years, talking about three years,
the next elections are next year in 2020.

Democracy means - A system of government by the whole population or all the
eligible members of an area/state.

Learning new concepts in class (Social Studies)

At the start of Social Studies today (01/08/2019) we were instructed to abandon
the electronics for we were going to use or brain and to also talk in groups.
First we were told to warm up our brain by memorising the 7 key concepts about
the government. Secondly me and my partner volunteer to present the words that
we had to remember. It was a bit hard to memorise the 7 words but it was a
win-win situation because we exercised our brain. After that we were shown
each meaning of the 7 words we were told. We again had to memorise all the
meaning to the words and later on present it. Again, me and my partner volunteered
to present to the class the meaning of a certain word. It was very challenging
because we had little time to memorise these words. My partner and I
were trying to remember and fortunately we did it.

Some of the new words I learned was:

  • Laws - A rule or set of rules
  • Member of parliament - A person who has been elected by the people
  • in a particular to electorate

  • Rights - something we are entitled to
  • Electorate - is a voting district
  • Political party - an organised party

Migration in the 21st Century and its effects (Social Studies)

What I found surprising was that  Countries in Europe are facing many problems.
Like In 2015, more than 35,000 children went to Sweden without their parents.
Since so many kid came at the same time, it took longer to find homes for the children.
4 children’s reported that they were not allowed to enroll in school because they didn’t
have a parent or someone who took care of them.

Most refugees came from impoverished backgrounds which was very challenging
for them which they had to cope with what was coming to them. Till these days
there are still more refugees seeking for help, home and food. Most of them were
involuntary to work, or to leave the country which was hard for them to look after
themselves and there family. The effects on these refugees are not as simply. They
have to have there documentation to be able to enter different places.

3 new words I learnt:
Impoverished
Involuntary
Documentation

Since Kiribati is sinking people are now leaving and families are struggling to find a place to stay. They are being forced to move which they have no other places to stay.

Summer Learning Journey Week 1 - Day 1

DAY 1: In the Beginning...

Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand [4 points]

According to Māori mythology, much of Aotearoa New Zealand was formed when Māui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Māui created a magical fish hook from the jawbone of his grandmother and that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. This ‘fish’ was actually the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Māui or ‘Māui’s fish’ and the South Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Waka a Māui or ‘Māui’s canoe’.
To learn more cool facts about New Zealand, check out the Tourism NZ website. Read the fun facts posted on the website and choose your ‘Top 3.’ On your blog, post your ‘Top 3 Fun Facts’ about NZ in your own words.

1. Did you know, to become a New Zealand citizen, you must swear an oath of loyalty to Queen Elizabeth!
2. Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand even though its capital is Wellington!
3. There seems to be no snakes in New Zealand!

Activity 2: North and South [4 points]
The country of New Zealand is made up of two main islands – the North Island and the South Island. Approximately 77% of the New Zealand population live in the North Island. Many of these people (including our Summer Learning Journey design team) live in Auckland city. Auckland is a great place to live with lots of amazing parks, beautiful waterways and stunning scenery to enjoy. It is also a busy, vibrant city with many cafes, museums, galleries and theatres to visit. I feel lucky to call Auckland my ‘hometown.’
Now it is time to think about your hometown. What is special about where you live? On your blog, describe your hometown. Be sure to include lots of describing words (adjectives) in your post.
Auckland is my hometown too! and yes, it is very true what you have said!
What I like about Auckland is that, they're lots of good people with bright ideas. What I also Like about Auckland is that there are lots of shop's, stores, restaurants, fast food place's, supermarkets and also a nice enjoyably beach.

Activity 3: Ice, Ice Baby [10 points]
Antarctica is the world’s coldest continent. Even though it is made up of ice, it is also the driest continent in the world. In fact, it hasn’t rained there for nearly 2 million years! It is home to many animals such as whales, seals, birds, and fish. There are no permanent human residents (people who live there all the time) in Antarctica, however scientists do visit and stay in Antarctica for a while to study it.

This year the airline, Air New Zealand, filmed their safety video in Antarctica. They used some fabulous actors from Hornby Primary School in Christchurch. Just like on aeroplanes, we also need to keep safe and be smart online. We need to think about the type of information we are sharing online, who we are sharing information with, and how to have a positive digital footprint.

This is my positive digital footprint! On this picture I have stated some things of what not to do! and some of what to do! I hope you learn something from my digital footprint !

Game Of Softball

Explain: Game Of Softball

Have you ever played softball? Have you ever heard about softball?
Well today I will show you what is softball and also show you how
you play softball.

First there are rules. Rules is in every sports there is.

Rules for softball (If you are bating):

  • You cannot bat unless you have a helmet on
  • Throw the bat to the side (Because if you leave the bat on home base that is an automatic out)
  • You have to touch the base with your feet to be safe
  • Your not supposed to stand on the base, only on the side of it

Rules if you are fielding:

  • There is 1 person at each diamond (4 including home base)
  • 3 people at the back of the diamonds on the outer field
  • A short stop, which is a person who is in the diamond ready for the hits that don’t go that far
  • A pitcher who is the thrower
  • And a back stop which is a person at the back of the hitter
  • getting ready to catch the ball from when the pitcher throws it

Softball is a type of game where you have to run and hit. Softball
also is an outdoor game, and also for both genders.

First if your bating you always should wear a helmet. When you hit the
ball make a run for it to base 1. If you hit it so hard that the fielders are
still trying to get the ball take that opportunity and run to the second base.
If by any chance they are still trying to get the ball make a run for it to base
3 than home back to where you started.

Glenbrae school should have a cafeteria in the hall?

Glenbrae school should have a cafeteria in the hall?

To: Mrs Elia

Glenbrae should have a cafeteria in the hall because… there are students that
don’t have breakfast every morning. I think that if they have healthy food from
the cafeteria they could learn better which they are filled up with energy and ready
to learn. It is also good to have a cafeteria because if you don’t bring lunch you
could go to the cafeteria, and also it will attract kids to come to school more and
come early more.

Thank You SLJ Team - (Happy New Year To You All)

Thank you SLJ Team

Throughout these 4 weeks, I’ve learned so much things. If there
was no Summer Learning Journey, I’d probably be just sitting at
home doing nothing, which is boring. I’d like to stay thank you
to Rachel and to your team for letting me and other kids take part
of your SLJ activities. We’d love if you come back with another
website we can take part of.

Thank you again and have a happy new year!!!

SLJ - Week 4 day 5 - (1,2 and Bonus Activity) Last day :(

Day 5: Looking into the Future

Activity 1: Your Future Self
It may be hard to imagine, but one day you will graduate
from high school and it will be time to decide what to
do next. You may want to study at university, become
an apprentice, go to training college, travel, or start
working. There are so many options!

Take a minute to think about your future. What would
you like to do when you finish school? Would you like
to work in a specific job? Would you like to study at university?
What would you study? Maybe you’d even like to move overseas.
Share your thoughts and ideas on your blog site. There
are no wrong answers!

When I grow older and graduate from college I will go
to university to learn how to become a doctor. I want
to work as a dentist. I want to help people to take care
of there teeth and become happy with who they are. I
also want to become a rugby player, which I got inspired
from Jonah Lomu the legend.

Activity 2: Flying Cars
Let’s imagine that you’ve just learned to drive, and your
family has decided to buy you a brand new car. You are
allowed to choose from any of the following designs:

flying car (2).jpg

On your blog please tell us which of the three cars you
would choose and why?

I chose the 2 picture. I really liked the way how it shows
how tough and strong the car is. I also chose that car because
you can carry a lot more people other than the other cars.
Also because it has more detail in it as you can see at the
front, the top and also the sides.

Bonus Activity: Blade Runner 2049
blade runner.jpg
There is a new movie out in cinemas at the moment called

It is a movie about what the world will be like in the future.
Imagine that you able to travel through time and that you
can see what the world will look like in 2099.

On your blog write a description of what New Zealand will
be like at that time (80 – 90 years from now). What kind of
houses will people live in? What will they eat? Where will
they work?

In 2099 you would be carrying a little square piece of paper
which is your home. You just place it down on the ground,
say the password and the magic will happen. The piece of
paper will all of a sudden grow into a luxury, smelling nice,
edible, big house.
