Activity 2
Read the following three reviews of books that are really popular right now in Canada. If you had to choose one for Curious Kiwi to read on the plane, which one would you choose? Post the name of the book that you would chose on your blog. Below the title explain why you would choose that book.
Book 1: Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2) by Suzanne Collins
Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol - a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create. Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.
Book 2: Matilda by Roald Dahl
Matilda is a sweet, exceptional young girl, but her parents think she's just a nuisance. She expects school to be different but there she has to face Miss Trunchbull, a kid-hating terror of a headmistress. When Matilda is attacked by the Trunchbull she suddenly discovers she has a remarkable power with which to fight back. It'll take a superhuman genius to give Miss Trunchbull what she deserves and Matilda may be just the one to do it!
Book 3: Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Ugly Truth
Greg Heffley has always been in a hurry to grow up. But is getting older really all it’s cracked up to be? Greg suddenly finds himself dealing with the pressures of boy-girl parties, increased responsibilities, and even the awkward changes that come with getting older—all without his best friend, Rowley, at his side. Bonus Activity
It’s time to use your imagination to write a short story. I’ve provided you with three different beginnings for a story. Choose your favourite beginning and finish the story. What happens next? You can use your imagination and create any ending that you want. To earn full points, you must post, at least 8-10 sentences, on your blog.
- I looked around the room. Nothing seemed unusual, but then…
- I knew it was going to be an unusual day when my mom came into my bedroom and said...
- The spaceship was out of control and only one person could save us....
I looked around the room, Nothing seemed unusual, but then… I woke up one night and felt very happy because tomorrow was going to be christmas. But.. I looked around the room, nothing seemed unusual, but then… I heard something. It was very dark and scary wind howling and branches hitting my window. I saw creepy shadows speeding around my room on the walls. Then all of a sudden a ghost started chasing me so I jumped out of my window and start running. Just as I was about to make to somewhere? I suddenly fell of a cliff from 100 foot. When I was about to hit the ground and splat into little pieces, I woke up in fear screaming for my life. My parents and my brothers woke up and went to see what was going on. “What happened” they shouted. “Just a dream, Just a dream”. After that night it was very silence.

Hi Loto,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on writing a great story. It was really nail biting. I was sitting on the edge of my seat as I was reading it, wondering what was going to happen next. Did this dream happen to you in real life? Did you really have a dream where you were falling and then woke up right before you hit the ground? Apparently, it is a common dream for people to have but I must admit that I have never had one quite like it. It sounds pretty frightening...
On a happier, lighter note, I also really enjoyed reading your explanation or rationale for your choice of book - Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I, too, love those books but I have never seen the movie. I think that I might buy my son (Aronui) a few of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books for his next birthday. He's going to be 7 years old. Would you recommend them for children as young as him or should I wait until he's a bit older?
I'd love to hear your opinion...
Thanks again for the awesome blogs, Loto. Great work!
Until next time,
Rachel :)
Hi Loto,
ReplyDeleteThis is all great work. I liked your summary of the story at the beginning. It was very interesting, and you are right: we don't need magic dust to be brave, all we need is ourselves. What are some other important lessons you've learned from books? I've learned to never give up and to try save everyone from a comic book!
Rachel pretty much summed up what I was going to say about your story and the Diary Of A Wimpy Kid, so I'll just say that I really enjoyed the story and keep up the great work!
Mark
Thanks very much!!!
